- 1.1 Description
- ---------------
- CIVILWAR BATTLE SET Version 1.4 is a tactical level war game
- based on battles from the American Civil War. "Winning" the
- battles depends on relative casualties, number of units
- eliminated, and controlling a key location on the battlefield
- (the 'objective'). There are several types of units and varying
- terrain situations, all of which affect the battle outcome. With
- this game , you can create, customize, and reconstruct Civil War
- battles. As much as possible, the game allows you freedom to not
- only play the scenarios, but also adjust the armies, and even
- modify most of the important aspects of the game itself.
-
- CIVILWAR BATTLE SET Version 1.4 is offered as a SHAREWARE
- product. You may feel free to make copies of this computer
- software and pass them along to your friends for evaluation.
- The game programs may be copied and distributed in unmodified
- form. Feel free to customize the xxx.CIV scenario files
- and create your own.
-
- CIVILWAR BATTLE SET Version 1.4 has undergone major changes! It
- has been enlarged to allow twice the number of armies (now up to
- 40 for each side)! Several additional features have been added in
- both the editor and the game itself to provide more realism, more
- user control flexibility, or more "user friendliness".
-
- The file structure of .CIV files has been modified to support
- changes in the editor and game (e.g. twice as many armies and
- enhancements in the 'delay' feature). This means that old
- scenarios will NOT work in version 1.4. However, the editor can
- CONVERT your old scenarios to the new format.
-
- If you like the program, you are encouraged to register your
- copy. Registered users will receive additional scenarios as well
- as additional information on any new versions.
-
- To register, send $10 to
-
- W. R. Hutsell
- 2021 Hutchinson Dr.
- Kingsport, TN 37660
-
- Educational institutions may register for only $1 (to defray the
- diskette and mailing cost) by ordering on stationery with the
- school letterhead.
-
- 1.2 Hardware Requirements
- --------------------------
- This should run on any IBM or clone which can display ASCII
- graphics (CIVILWAR uses character graphics only), with a color
- monitor. It is written in Quickbasic 4.0 (trademark of
- Microsoft), and requires DOS 2.1 or higher. The program is
- provided in complied form, so you do not have to have Quickbasic
- to enjoy the program.
-
- 1.3 Files
- ---------
- There are 2 main program files, 2 utility files, and several
- supporting data files:
-
- CIVILWAR.EXE - the main war game program
- CIVILSET.EXE - the scenario editor
- CIVILCAT.BAT - used by CIVILSET to update the catalog
- of .CIV files
- CIVILWAR.CAT - the catalog of .CIV files, used by
- CIVILCAT.BAT
- xxx.CIV - battle data files, each representing a
- battle scenario. One is $AVEGAME.CIV
- which is used to save games in progress
- PREFER.CFG - configuration file to save your
- customized game parameter preferences
- UNION.LDR - file of 15 Union leaders and ratings
- REBEL.LDR - file of 15 Rebel leaders and ratings
- FILES - complete list of files on distribution disk
-
- 1.4 Installation
- ----------------
- The program may be run from a floppy or loaded to your hard
- drive. All the program files need to be in the same directory
- for the program to work properly.
-
- WHEN YOU CREATE YOUR OWN NEW SCENARIOS - PLEASE NOTE :
- The catalog file uses a utility program, CIVILCAT.BAT which
- sorts the scenario files alphabetically and stores them in
- CIVILWAR.CAT. The utility MUST be able to access the SORT
- command from DOS. (SORT must either be in the same directory
- as the game, or be accessible through a PATH statement.)
-
- If the catalog is not properly updated, YOU CANNOT USE YOUR
- NEW SCENARIOS. The scenario files (xxx.CIV) will still exist, but
- the game program will not be able to find them. (If you suspect
- this problem, check to see if the catalog file CIVLWAR.CAT has
- been reduced to 0 bytes. If it has, the utility did not find the
- SORT utility).
-
- The solution is to make sure SORT is available to
- CIVILCAT.BAT.
